Not only is The House of Seven Gables one of my favorite books, but these illustrations really capture the moods of the book from austerity of the house to the street urchin entering the shop to buy a stale piece of gingerbread. The illustrations reflect styles of the time - sometimes reflecting art nouveau influences and other contemporary styles.

Description:
Rackham began illustrating books in 1893 and this would be one of his earlier works. His 8th among 80+ titles. It predates the technology for colored prints that brought him to widespread acclaim with his illustrations of Rip Van Winkle in 1905. It lacks the fanciful creatures, but you can see the strength of his imagination and fluidity of line especially in the 2 prints in this book titled: "These Dauntless Men Worked Unceasingly" and "He Knew That She Was Dead".
Condition:
grey-blue cloth with gold lettering to the upper cover with a small embossed rose design to the centre, lettered in gold to the spine. A fair copy of this very scarce title. The Ivory Door - A Legend in a Prologue and Three ActsMilne, in his humorous preface, tries to assure his readers that the play is not at all like Winnie the Pooh, "Why should you read it? . . . For I think ( if an author may make these confessions) that it is the best play that I have written; even if it reminds me, not in the least of my favorite Pooh, but very much of an earlier play, not noticeably whimsical, The Truth About Blayds."

First Edition Hardcover inscribed and signed by the author. "To my dear rector and friend Rev. I. Newton Phelps with the compliments of the author Lawrence Daniel Fogg"

Synopsis: The newspaperman goes to Hades interviews "Boss" Tweed, Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth, Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare, Washington, Methuselah, Adam, Eve and Cain. Much of the contemporary history of the times colored this farce. Many of the references of the day may be lost to the contemporary reader, but punning never goes out of fashion. (Perhaps because it has never been in fashion.) One example; among other "interviews" - the newspaperman in Hades finds John Paul Jones and discusses Jones' wishes for the location of the re-internment of his body. It seems, that when Jones died in 1792, he was buried without much fanfare, but by 1905, several cities in the US were vying for the honor to re-bury this illustrious revolutionary war hero. This honor was given to Annapolis Maryland in 1906 - presumably after this book had gone to press.
Curiously among other discussions are how the engineers in Hades produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen to make water. "Up on earth, they need coal or its equivalent to furnish power to produce electricity. Down here we make it from the decomposition of water and permitting the oxygen and the hydrogen to re-unite." - note that this predates any scientific discussions on nuclear fusion. I am no scientist, but find it curious that Fogg was born the same year as Albert Einstein, who's works opened the field of fusion and that this reference comes out soon after Einstein's first major publication . . . hmmm?
Condition: Good condition - some foxing - pencil marks highlight reader's - cover corners are bent. - see pictures and description above.

Wikipedia has a description of Allen Norton and his place in early 20th century poetry
Here's my favorite poem from the collection: (I'm no poetry critic, but it makes me think of a cross between Lewis Caroll and Bob Dylan.
There are no toilets in the Kings' corridors,
And so the dames made busy in the house,
Dusting the spider legs from mouse to mouse
And battling with the beetles on all fours.
"Oh, who would be a suffragette?" said one,
"Nay, who would be a riddle:" said a third;
The second answered nothing, but in fun
Was running ribbons in the humming bird.
We cannot feed each beggar in the land,
But when the Queen gave me her velvet hand
And whispered the gipsy in my ear,
I bought her thistle sandwiches and beer,
And then amid the dashing of the steeds
We danced the Turkey Trot like centipedes.
